I have often witnessed the strength, loyalty and kindness of the people of Liverpool, so it was no surprise on Monday, when people rushed to try and stop a tragic event unfolding during the victory celebration and parade for their beloved football team. Liverpudlians will protect and show up, as they are not ones to avert their gaze or adopt a ‘nothing to do with me’ attitude. They are a force to be reckoned with and fully embrace the spirit of community, with hearts that beat with love and pride. Everyone is treated as family, unless you show them otherwise.
On Monday, the public transport system was shut down till the authorities knew what they were dealing with, and they then faced the challenge of many thousands of people trying to get home when the system reopened later. Many members of staff from all the emergency services and the public transport services stayed long after their shifts had ended to ensure everyone got home safely.
Our thoughts and prayers are with all those who were injured, and their loved ones.❤️
I sat with a Liverpudlian family recently, and as they shared memories of their beloved Mum, a heartbroken gaze met mine, saying,
‘She was a proper Mum. Do you know what I mean?’
I nodded and held his gaze. ❤️
My heart holds many memories from when I moved to the top of The Wirral ten years ago, and I would travel across The Mersey River to explore Liverpool. I felt safe and was often met with,
‘Are you alright, love?’
‘Do you need help?’
One memory is clear.
I had spent a few happy hours in the main library and needed a hot meal before I travelled back home. The pub was packed, and I had been standing at the bar for a good long while, unseen by the servers dashing back and forth. A handsome young man came up beside me and asked if I was alright. I laughingly said that I was waiting to be served. He’d been watching and had come over to help. You’ll love what happened next.
He winked at me, took a £20 note out of his pocket, held it up and leant against the bar. In a nanosecond, three servers stood before him, batting their eyelashes and asking what they could do for him.
He turned and grinned at me,
‘You can serve this lovely lady here. Thank you.’
Then he stepped away.
Liverpudlians. ❤️
